4 key updates about Blue Shield of California and Magellan

Blue Shield of California is making changes with its arrangement with Magellan, which may affect how you access your mental health care. Knowing the key updates in advance can help you navigate your health insurance more easily and prevent delays, so you can get expert support when you need it. In fact, these health insurance updates will streamline the process for many members, and may help you access mental health treatments sooner.

Here’s what you need to know:

As a result, this change makes accessing mental health care much easier, allowing you to receive treatment sooner.

1. Blue Shield of California will no longer use Magellan as its mental health carve-out effective January 1, 2026.

This update means you no longer need to go through Magellan to get an authorization. Instead, you can connect with Lightfully directly in network. Removing the step of requesting authorization reduces the wait time and paperwork. As a result, this change makes accessing mental health care much easier, allowing you to receive treatment sooner.

2. Magellan will still operate independently.

Magellan will continue to operate independently, with a smaller client base, including in some adult Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs), but it is no longer affiliated with Blue Shield of California.

3. Lightfully remains directly in network with Blue Shield of California across all of our locations.

While Magellan will no longer be connected with Blue Shield of California, Lightfully is still an in-network provider for Blue Shield plans, giving you easy access to evidence-based, high-quality mental health care. Our compassionate licensed clinical therapists are here to support you.

4. Members who previously required Magellan authorization can now directly access Lightfully through Blue Shield of California.

If you had to request approval from Magellan before starting your treatment, you will no longer need to take this step. You can now schedule with Lightfully directly to get the support you need and receive timely care.
