5 Ways a Therapist Can Help You Navigate a Midlife Crisis

Reading Time: 3 minutes

When you reach what might be the midpoint of your life, you might expect to feel settled as an adult. But this time can bring up questions about identity, purpose and life goals. You might think about whether you are who you want to be, question what you want to do or consider new goals.

When you’re thinking through so many things, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed. You might also reconsider your choices and make new ones, leading to a period of transition. Transitions like a career shift, a move or a relationship change can bring up many emotions. And when you’re in the midst of it all, who can you talk to?

Having a compassionate, neutral person to talk to about it all may make the experience easier. A Lightfully therapist for midlife crisis support can help you through this.

What can a therapist do for you?

At Lightfully, a licensed clinical therapist can provide comprehensive, holistic care in a Virtual Partial Hospitalization Program (vPHP). This includes 20 hours of programming per week with therapy, psychiatry and family therapy appointments. It also features four hours of group meetings per day.

A licensed therapist can:

  • Give you a private setting to talk about a midlife crisis

Need someone to talk to who can give you their full attention? What about someone who listens carefully, without judgment? Unfortunately, a person like this may be hard to find in your family or social group, when people might be preoccupied by their own concerns. A therapist can give you a welcoming and confidential space to talk.

  • Provide ongoing care throughout the experience

A midlife crisis can involve a reckoning with serious questions. It can lead you to make serious decisions about your life, relationships and future. It can cause mood swings, impulsivity and discontent. While you’re weathering the waves of this, a therapist’s help can anchor you.

  • Work with a care team of experienced professionals

In Lightfully’s vPHP, your licensed clinical therapist is part of a team. They can collaborate with the other clinicians who lead group sessions. Plus, you can work with a psychiatrist. Taking medication is not required in this program, but if you may need it or you already take it, a psychiatrist can provide medication management services.

  • Connect you with other clients in peer support groups

When a midlife crisis makes you feel like you’re alone, you can meet other people sharing similar experiences. You can discuss your thoughts and feelings with people who understand, and discuss your next steps together. A clinician facilitates the group.

  • Help you turn a period of stress into one of progress

With professional help and peer support, you can find ways to move forward. You can also learn self-care techniques and develop skills in therapy to manage in a healthy way the thoughts and feelings that might arise.

Navigate a midlife crisis in our vPHP

Our vPHP offers several unique benefits as a mental health treatment approach. If you participate in this program, you can:

  • Remain at home throughout treatment. You don’t have to stay somewhere else or travel to and from frequent appointments to benefit from care.
  • Move through this part of your life with consistent peer support. You can work through the midlife crisis and any transitions that may come with it together.
  • Get comprehensive treatment for an underlying mental health concern. If you have a mental health condition, we can provide whole-person-centered care.
  • Exit this level of treatment with professional support. When your vPHP treatment ends, we can continue providing treatment through other levels of care.

We’re not just here for the midlife crisis — our team is here for whatever you may need to elevate your mental, emotional and relational health. A therapist, psychiatrist or group leader can draw from experience and training as you pass through the midlife crisis and into a new phase of life.
