If you’re feeling overwhelmed by life but not quite ready for Residential Treatment, an adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) might be exactly what you need. You get a personalized treatment plan, including a great therapist, group treatments, and family therapy — all the benefits of a more robust treatment program. Except you still get to sleep in your own bed and keep up with your Netflix shows.
Think of IOP as the sweet spot between weekly therapy sessions and round-the-clock care. You can receive treatment for many different mental health conditions. You’ll get the intensive support you need to work through whatever’s going on, but you won’t have to put your entire life on pause. And honestly? That balance can make all the difference when you just want to start feeling like yourself again.
Here’s everything you need to know about what adult IOP looks like, what it feels like, and how it might just be the support system you’ve been looking for.
Treatment structure and schedule
IOP is a form of structured outpatient treatment. Treatment days in IOP at Lightfully are between 3-6 hours a day, up to five days a week. Clients see their individual therapist once a week, and many of the treatments are delivered in group sessions. Family therapy sessions are also included. Your treatment plan will be tailored to suit your needs, and you can work with your clinicians to make adjustments as necessary.
Therapeutic approaches used in IOP
At Lightfully, our licensed clinicians use a framework called Precision Care Model (PCM) to create personalized treatment experiences using evidence-based modalities. We focus on four core processes to help you create new routines for lasting change: thoughts, emotions, behaviors and relationships. Your primary therapist will deliver highly targeted treatments that help you gain insight into your condition and make transformative change. In family therapy sessions, your loved ones will learn about what you’re experiencing and their roles in supporting you.
Some of the modalities used in Lightfully’s IOP include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and cognitive processing therapy (CPT), as well as compassion-based therapies. Each of these helps you recognize your thoughts and emotions and understand how they work together. Some are more focused on skills for emotion regulation, mindfulness, relationships or distress tolerance. Others are more focused on reflection and transforming or reframing negative beliefs.
Group treatments add a unique social dimension to treatment. They focus on processing experiences, learning skills, and building your support system. Group sessions allow you to connect with other people going through similar experiences and create a sense of companionship. Hearing other people’s stories is a great source of hope as well.
Daily experience in adult IOP
On a typical IOP treatment day, you’ll have a couple of different group sessions. You may also meet with your individual therapist or have a family therapy session. Some group sessions will be more conversation-based, some will be about learning a concept or skill, and some will be centered around activities. Some will have a specific focus, and others will be more free-flowing.
There may be simple reflection activities or journaling between sessions. These usually involve some reflection questions or an activity to try.
Interacting with other clients is a significant aspect of IOP, and you may feel a special connection with your cohort.
How do I know if IOP will be a good fit for me?
If outpatient therapy hasn’t been sufficient in helping to manage your symptoms, or if you’re looking for a more in-depth treatment experience, IOP may be a good fit. Intensive Outpatient Programs provide comprehensive mental health treatment while allowing you to maintain your daily responsibilities and commitments. The insights you gain and the skills you learn in IOP can help you care for yourself more proactively and achieve sustainable well-being.
