Your favorite song could tug at your heartstrings on your way to work, or a tense exchange at the office can make you feel frustrated or agitated. Then, a conversation with your partner can leave you feeling loved and understood back at home. Emotions are central to the human experience, guiding our thoughts, actions and behaviors in different ways.

If that’s the case, you may be experiencing emotional overload. This occurs when you’re bombarded with too many complex feelings at once or a single feeling that’s so intense it’s hard to manage. 7 signs of emotional overload

Emotional overload is different from stress. Yes, you might feel stressed about an upcoming family reunion or performance review. However, overwhelm typically happens when the pressure of those stressors builds up to seemingly uncontrollable levels, and it often comes with a distinct heaviness. As this extra weight settles deeply inside your chest or on your mind, you might notice the following symptoms:

1. Anxiety

Emotional overload can make you feel anxious, fearful or on edge, especially during a traumatic or high-stress situation. Anxiety can manifest as a sense of restlessness or irritability. For some people, emotionally overwhelming situations might even trigger a panic attack. 

2. Depression

If life feels overwhelming or you’ve suffered an intense loss, you might begin to feel depressed. This co-occurring condition typically comes when stress becomes unmanageable, causing feelings of sadness or hopelessness, a lack of motivation, and little interest in your favorite activities.

3. Mood swings

Some people feel a wide range of emotions during particularly hard times. For instance, you might feel suddenly angry or irritable at first, and then tired or lonely later on. It all depends on your situation, the level of support around you and the coping skills in your emotional regulation toolbox.

We can’t always control how we’re feeling. However, you might feel guilty about how those moments of emotional dysregulation have impacted other people, or feel helpless when things seem unmanageable and you don’t know what to do about it.

7. Mental burnout

If you’ve been struggling to process big feelings for a while and your stress has suddenly peaked, overwhelm can also feel a lot like burnout. In this case, you might feel drained, detached, numb or flat-out exhausted.

That way you can compare how you’re feeling to what’s going on in your life and see if there’s a correlation.

How to deal with overwhelming emotions

  • Naming your emotions — Identifying your feelings can help you learn how to manage them.
  • Writing in your journal — Sometimes unloading on paper makes it easier to process what you’re feeling.
  • Talking to a friend — Leaning on your support system is a great way to help lighten your mental load and gain practical advice.
  • Doing a meditation exercise — Meditating is something you can do just about anytime or anywhere to help yourself calm down.
  • Going for a walk — A change of scenery can help lower your stress levels and provide a little more space to breathe.
  • Visiting your therapist — A licensed clinical therapist can help you work through intense emotions and teach you valuable coping strategies.
