The holidays can be a wonderful time to sing your favorite carols, sip hot chocolate and enjoy your favorite traditions. However, for many people, this time of year can be overwhelming. In fact, about 90% of adults in the United States experience holiday stress, particularly over financial concerns, potential family conflicts and missing their loved ones.

5 strategies to manage holiday stress

Anyone can be stressed this time of year, but don’t let this emotion overshadow the holidays. There are many proven techniques you can try to find relief, carve out time to relax and enjoy this time of year. Here are some effective strategies you can consider to feel more at ease over the holidays:

1. Set realistic expectations.

The holiday season can increase your expectations from loved ones and yourself. Many people feel the need to have the perfect holiday and overexert themselves trying to meet everyone’s needs. When you set realistic expectations for your holiday season, you can reduce your stress and find more enjoyment this time of year. Think about what matters most to you. Is it spending time with your family? Doing your favorite traditions? Or taking a relaxing break? No holiday is ever 100% perfect and that’s OK. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, time or energy to have an enjoyable holiday. Let go of unrealistic expectations and create moments that bring joy.

2. Prioritize self-care.

With holiday parties, buying presents and family gatherings, sometimes your own needs end up taking a back seat. Prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish. It’s a great way for you to relax and recharge, helping you navigate the holidays more easily. Dedicating even a short amount of time to unwind can alleviate pressure. Some great ideas for self-care include getting enough sleep, taking a short walk or journaling how you feel. 

3. Create healthy boundaries.

During the holiday season, it can be easy to overcommit to different activities. Knowing your limits can help you balance your time and relieve overwhelming feelings. It’s OK to say no to prevent burnout. Establishing healthy boundaries doesn’t mean you’re selfish or have control issues. It means you’re taking an important step to protect your time and energy. If someone asks you to do something that you don’t have time for, you can clearly and politely say no. For example, if you’re declining an invitation to a party, you can say, “I appreciate the invitation, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this year.”

4. Make time for activities you enjoy.

The holidays aren’t just about keeping up with obligations to others. They’re also about finding time for you to have some fun. Spending time doing your favorite things can lower cortisol levels and raise endorphins, which reduces stress and elevates your mood. You can spend time on your favorite hobby, get your favorite holiday drink or listen to music you enjoy. If you’re afraid you can’t find any time to unwind, you can try marking it on your calendar to reserve this important time. 

5. Connect with your loved ones.

Being with family and friends can provide a sense of belonging and support, which can alleviate your stress during the holidays. This holiday season, make a point of spending quality time with loved ones near and far. You can invite them to join you in some of your favorite activities to ensure some quality time. It’s great if you can gather in person, but if you can’t, you can always text, call or schedule a virtual meeting. These are all good opportunities to bond with one another and strengthen your relationships.
