What Should You Expect From an Online Borderline Personality Disorder Test?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a type of mental health condition that involves symptoms such as emotional dysregulation and unstable thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It’s a condition that affects nearly 1.4% of adults in the U.S. with nearly 75% of those adults diagnosed with BPD identifying as women. The exact causes of this condition aren’t well known; experts believe it to be a combination of family genetics and social environment. Some people who are diagnosed with BPD have a history of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or neglect. If you believe you may be dealing with BPD, you may have considered taking an online borderline personality disorder test. But before you do, here’s what you should know about these tests.

What questions might you see on an online borderline personality disorder test?

Several types of questions might appear on an online BPD test, such as:

  • Do you often experience relationships with others that feel intense and unstable? — This question is designed to tap into whether you tend to experience emotionally volatile relationships with others. Many people who have BPD will have unstable relationships with others and feel as if they can’t rely on any one person.

  • Do you find that you often put other people on a pedestal at first and eventually switch to strongly disliking them? — Another sign that a person may have BPD is if they feel like they often go through periods where they idealize someone, and then those positive feelings abruptly change to extremely negative.

  • Do you go through frequent and intense mood changes? — An indicator that someone is dealing with BPD is frequent and sudden changes in mood. Someone with this disorder might go from feeling extremely happy one moment to irritated or angry in the next. Individuals with BPD may also feel as if their more negative emotions, like sadness, are harder to control.

  • Do you frequently experience urges to harm yourself or put yourself in danger? — Another symptom of BPD is the temptation toward self-harm or reckless behavior. This question, or some variant of it on an online quiz, is designed to determine if you experience thoughts of self-harm or impulsive behavior.

What happens after you take an online BPD test?

Some online Borderline Personality Disorder tests can give you immediate results after you answer the series of questions. While an online quiz won’t be able to provide you with a clinical diagnosis, it can serve as a good indicator that you might want to get assessed by a licensed clinical therapist. If you’d like to take an online BPD quiz, you can try out a simple and quick version here. Our online quiz won’t give you results right away, but we will send your answers to a team of licensed clinical therapists who can analyze your results. From there, we will reach out to you through email and, if fitting, recommend any consultation needed for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. It’s important to remember that online BPD quizzes are not comprehensive diagnostic tools and can’t replace a proper diagnosis from a professional mental health treatment provider.
