Summer is supposed to be all sunshine, beach days and barbecues, right? But if you’re feeling more blah than bliss, you’re not alone. While summer looks fun on the outside, it can be secretly exhausting. All the extra fun and freedom can actually sneakily lead to burnout

The pressure to have the best summer ever is real. Your social media will start filling up with pictures of everyone’s epic vacations and endless pool days. And don’t forget the heat, making everything stickier and more exhausting.

Why summer can lead to burnout

Even though summer seems relaxing, stress can actually sneak in from all angles:

  • Overcommitment

Suddenly, your calendar is packed tighter than a family crammed in a car on a road trip. Every weekend is booked with getaways, must-do activities and cookouts. In the heat of the moment, it feels fun to say “yes” to everything, but when it comes time to do things, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed and drained.

  • High expectations

Movies and social media paint the perfect picture of summer for parents, college students, kids and everyone in between. Summer should always be full of endless laughter, impeccable tans and zero stress, right? When your reality doesn’t exactly match up, it can be a major downer and add to feelings of pressure to keep up.

  • Seasonal changes

Believe it or not, the shift in seasons can also mess with your mood and energy levels. Changes in daylight can affect your sleep patterns and the high heat of the day can be physically draining.

  • Social comparison

Scrolling through everyone else’s seemingly perfect summer adventures on social media can make you feel like you’re not having enough fun or doing enough things. It’s incredibly easy to fall into the social media comparison trap, comparing your behind-the-scenes to others’ highlight reels.

  • Lack of routine

While the freedom of summer can be amazing, a complete lack of structure can sometimes derail you, leaving you feeling disorganized and overwhelmed. Without your usual schedule, it can be harder to prioritize tasks and take care of yourself.

6 sneaky signs of summer burnout

Here’s how to tell if summer burnout is creeping in, and some may surprise you:

  1. You’re exhausted all the time.
  2. You’re extra irritable or moody.
  3. You’re not excited about things anymore.
  4. You find it hard to concentrate.
  5. You’re pulling away from people.
  6. Your burnout is getting physical with things like headaches, stomachaches or even trouble sleeping.

Some of these symptoms overlap with heat-related illness, so medical evaluation should be completed.

The good news is that you can beat the heat without burning out. Here are some ways you can stay calm, cool and collected all summer long:

  • Embrace flexibility

You don’t have to have your summer perfectly planned out. Don’t be afraid to change your plans if you’re not feeling up to something. Go with the flow and be open to spontaneous adventures.

  • Focus on one thing at a time

It can be draining trying to juggle too many things at once. Practice being present in what you’re doing, whether it’s reading, swimming or just hanging out with friends.

  • Check in with yourself

Take a few minutes each day to check in with yourself and ask how you’re really feeling. Name the emotions. Recognizing your feelings is the first step to addressing them.

  • Set realistic expectations

Don’t cling to the pressure of having to have the perfect summer. It’s OK if you have a staycation instead of a big, fancy getaway. Focus on enjoying the small moments.

  • Prioritize self-care

The easy flow of summer break can get lost in the hustle and bustle. Make sure you take time to do things that help you relax and recharge. This could be anything from spending some time in nature to listening to music to reading in a hammock.

  • Create a summer routine

You don’t have to create a hard and fast schedule, but having some loose structure can help you feel more grounded. This could be anything from keeping a regular bedtime to dedicating a certain time of day to relaxation.

  • Unplug from social media

Protect your peace and take breaks from social media. Remember that what you see on social media is the best moment frozen in time, not the whole truth.

  • Hydrate and eat well

Staying hydrated and nourishing your body with healthy foods helps give you the energy you need to tackle the summer heat and festivities.

  • Practice mindfulness

Doing some simple mindfulness exercises, like focusing on your breath or noticing sensations around you, can help you reduce stress and stay in the present.

  • Stay connected in real life

While it’s great to unplug from social media, make sure you stay connected to friends and family in person. This can help you boost your mood and reduce feelings of isolation.

  • Consider going to therapy

If you’re really struggling with burnout, talking to a counselor or licensed therapist can provide you with valuable support and healthy coping skills.

  • Get moving

You can boost your energy levels and improve your mood by doing even gentle exercises like a quick swim or walk.

  • Keep a journal

It can be helpful to write down your thoughts and feelings to process stress and identify patterns of burnout.

  • Reevaluate your work-life balance

Make sure you’re not overworking yourself. Whether you’re a student with a summer job or a parent juggling kids and work, balance your commitments with time for rest and fun.

The most important memories often come from slowing down, tuning in and choosing what’s right for you, not what looks best on social media.

You don’t have to do it all this summer to make it count. The most important memories often come from slowing down, tuning in and choosing what’s right for you, not what looks best on social media.

If you’re feeling the signs of burnout, take it seriously and take care of yourself. Real rest, connection and support can make a big difference.
