How Much Does PHP Actually Disrupt Your Daily Life? A PHP Q&A

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Dr. Nicole Siegfried is the chief clinical officer at Lightfully Behavioral Health, where she helps guide whole-person-centered treatment across multiple levels of care. As a licensed clinical psychologist, she brings deep experience in evidence-based care, clinical leadership and program development. In this Q&A, Dr. Siegfried explains how a Partial Hospitalization Program, also called Day Treatment Program, can fit into daily life when someone needs more support than weekly therapy.

If you are searching for “PHP near me,” you may already know weekly therapy does not feel like enough. You may also be wondering how much a Partial Hospitalization Program, also called Day Treatment Program, could change your schedule. PHP can be a bigger time commitment than weekly therapy, but it does not require overnight care. At Lightfully, PHP offers structured mental health support during the day so clients can return home afterward.

PHP can add structure to your day without requiring an overnight stay.

What is PHP?

Dr. Siegfried — PHP stands for Partial Hospitalization Program, or Day Treatment Program. It is a structured level of mental health care for adults who need significantly more support than standard outpatient treatment but can safely receive care without 24-hour hospitalization.

The term Partial Hospitalization may sound confusing. It comes from a time when patients would step down from inpatient psychiatric hospitalization to attending during the day and going home in the evening. These  days partial hospitalization programs don’t have anything to do with a hospital. Clients come into treatment during the day and receive

individual therapy, family support, psychiatry, group sessions and weekly treatment planning. This is why the term Day Treatment Program  is often a better description

How many hours does PHP take?

Dr. Siegfried — PHP is usually a daytime commitment. The exact schedule depends on the program and clinical needs.

This is more time than a standard therapy appointment. When I talk about the PHP level of care, I like to say that life should revolve around treatment at this level of care. Treatment should take priority over work, school, caregiving or errands.

Can I keep working or going to school during PHP?

Dr. Siegfried — Some people adjust work or school during PHP. Others may need medical leave, reduced hours or help planning around treatment. The right choice depends on your symptoms, schedule and responsibilities.

It may help to ask:

  • Schedule — What days and hours are required?
  • Attendance — How flexible is the program?
  • Leave — Do I need time off work or school?
  • Privacy — What do I want to share with others?
  • Support — Who can help with meals, rides or childcare?

A practical list of questions can make a first call feel less overwhelming.

Does PHP mean I have to stay overnight?

Dr. Siegfried — No. PHP is not the same as Residential Treatment or inpatient hospital care. In PHP, clients receive structured care during the day and return home afterward.

This is one reason PHP can be a helpful middle step. It offers more support than weekly outpatient therapy while still keeping you connected to your home routine.

What happens during a PHP day?

Dr. Siegfried — A PHP day may include several types of support. This can help clients practice skills, learn patterns and receive care from a treatment team.

Programming includes:

  • Individual therapy — sessions with a therapist focused on symptom relief, identifying and addressing root causes or symptoms, and applying therapeutic interventions.
  • Group sessions — psychotherapy sessions with other clients in which therapists provide group education and processing and facilitate peer support.
  • Psychiatry — Medication support
  • Family therapy— sessions with a therapist that include families and clients to address communication, education, and relapse prevention.
  • Treatment planning — Clear goals and next steps

Can PHP help me stay connected to real life?

Dr. Siegfried — Yes definitely. The beauty of PHP is that you learning the skills during the day and applying them in the evening. Clients are able to run their own “real-life experiments” and process and adjust in real time.

This can make treatment more practical. You are not only talking about daily life; you are still living it.

What if I need PHP but cannot commute?

Dr. Siegfried — If commuting is a barrier, a Virtual Partial Hospitalization Program may be worth asking about. It may help adults who need PHP-level structure and can safely participate from home.

Virtual care may reduce travel time and make treatment feel more possible. It is not the right fit for every situation, especially if safety concerns are high.

How do I know if PHP is too much or not enough?

Dr. Siegfried — A clinical assessment can help match care to your symptoms, safety needs and daily functioning. PHP may fit if you need more structure than weekly therapy and can safely return home after care.

PHP may not be enough if you need 24-hour monitoring or cannot stay safe at home. A lower level may fit if symptoms are stable and weekly care is enough.

Intensive Outpatient Programs are less intensive than partial hospitalization and may include group therapy, individual therapy, education and medication management.

An Intensive Outpatient Program may support adults who need more than weekly therapy but less structure than PHP.
