What type of treatment is there for suicidal ideation?

Are you or someone you know experiencing suicidal ideations? You can reach out to a licensed mental health professional and schedule a same-day appointment or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988.

There are a few different treatment options for someone who finds themselves thinking about suicide. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your licensed mental health professional may suggest any of the following to you:

  • Residential treatment — One treatment option is a residential treatment program. This involves spending time in a live-in health care facility. The facility is designed to foster mental and emotional clarity, growth, and healing. It’s meant to provide a safe and engaging environment to help support a healthy recovery. During residential treatment, a client lives in a shared home with several other clients. They all receive treatment each day from professionals who work with clients in the shared home.

  • Intensive outpatient program — Another option for someone in need of treatment is intensive outpatient care. These types of programs involve regular counseling sessions at professional mental health care facilities. These programs can involve group sessions, individual sessions, life skill-building sessions and coping skill-building sessions.

  • Day treatment program — For those needing mental health treatment, day programs can be an effective option. They involve intensive treatment sessions during the daytime for several weeks. They differ from residential treatment programs. They don’t involve overnight stays but can provide a similar level of constant care.

How can treatment help someone who is experiencing suicidal ideations?

If you’re experiencing suicidal ideations, it’s a good idea for you to seek out treatment. Mental health treatment from a professional can provide you with a number of benefits that you may not have previously been aware of:

  • Addressing any mental health disorders you may have — One of the benefits of receiving treatment for suicidal ideations is that it can potentially identify and address any mental health disorders you may have. Are you struggling with a disorder that’s not yet been diagnosed? A professional may be able to identify it for you. Then, you can begin the treatment you need.

  • Providing a safe outlet to communicate your needs — Dealing with suicidal ideations can leave a person feeling isolated and unable to convey their struggles. Treatment can provide a safe outlet for those who are struggling to speak with someone about what they’re going through.

  • Putting you on the path toward recovery — Another benefit of receiving treatment for suicidal ideations is that it can help put you on the path toward recovery. Recovery can be difficult without the right kind of support. Fortunately, mental health specialists can provide their clients with the resources they need to start feeling better.
