  • Ask open-ended questions — Instead of simple yes or no questions, try things like, “What are you passionate about?” or “What’s been the highlight of your week?”
  • Listen actively — This is essential! Put the phone away and give them your undivided attention. Make eye contact as this helps show you’re engaged and listening. 
  • Follow up — Remember something they told you? Ask about it later! This shows you were truly listening and that you care. 
  • Be courageously vulnerable 

It can be scary to let your guard down, but it’s a step you have to take to build trust and intimacy. When you’re willing to go deeper, others can feel safe to do the same.
